Yoga Philosophy Immersion
and morning mysore practice
Mandrem, Goa | Jan 19-31
After my month-long intensive at Purple Valley, I move over to Mandrem for two more weeks of mysore-style asana practice, together with an exciting new offering: Yoga Philosophy Essentials. This course will assume no prior knowledge of philosophy, but will cover essential themes in a way that is both simple and profound. The focus will be on uncovering the relevance of Indian philosophy and mythology for us today.
The relationship between yoga practice and philosophy is too often handled as a theoretical affair. But philosophy is an essential element of yoga practice itself, without which the practice remains rather hollow. In this workshop, we aim to elucidate some crucial philosophical ideas that we can bring alive on the medium of our breathing bodies, ideas that can give us a new understanding of what yoga practice is all about, and which can enrich our practice immediately.
What we seek is not simply an understanding of how yoga was imagined in the past, but a clear vision of what yoga is presently. That is, we seek an illuminating idea of what the modern vinyasa revival is all about, an idea that captures its spiritual essence, and helps us reorient ourselves toward its fulfillment.
We trust in the hidden intelligence of our yoga, as well as the spiritual potential of modern yoga practitioners, and we see that our yoga needs fresh elucidation, from the same ground out of which the tradition sprang. So we explore traditional ideas and symbols and images, and we allow ourselves to reflect on them—while the resonance of a deep morning asana practice stills echoes through our bones.
